"Warikomi" means 'sandwich' in Japanese. The blade of this knife has a central harder layer of SK steel for improved edge retention, sandwiched between two layers of soft iron for strength. This is the same construction you find in a Samurai sword.

This knife has a blade 63mm long (so can be carried legally in the UK). The design is characterised by the 'chikiri' - the lever used to open the knife. There is no locking mechanism. Note that this knife is not stainless so please keep it dry to avoid corrosion.

HIGONOKAMI

A ‘Higonokami’ is a traditional Japanese folding pocket knife, designed in 1896. These knives were once carried by virtually every person in Japan. The name means “Lord-of-Higo”. Higo was an old province in Japan, on the island of Kyūshū, today’s Kumamoto Prefecture. “Kami”, literally “protector”, was used as an honourable title for Samurai of very high rank bestowed upon them by the shōgun.

5TH GENERATION BLACKSMITH

The only maker allowed to call his knives ‘Higonokami’ now is 5th generation blacksmith Mr Nagao, based in Miki. Mr Nagao has produced these knives for TOG and we have laser etched our logo on the handles.

I'm very pleased. The knife

"I'm very pleased. The knife arrived next working day, is small enough for a pocket, but the blade is a good length, and seems very well made. Just what I wanted,"

Lovely little Higonokami - you

"Lovely little Higonokami - you won’t find anything better to have around for opening packages / breaking down boxes. Very sharp out of the box, both at the tip and along the edge. Blade is a little stiff to open, but I’d expect this to relax slightly over time."
